COACH is recuiting health informatics student for MacKenzie Health Epic HIS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: COACH supports Mackenzie Health with large-scale digital health/health informatics undergraduate and post-graduate students recruitment initiative

Toronto, ON - February 8, 2017 - Today COACH: Canada's Health Informatics Association announced the roll-out of a major recruitment initiative with the goal of hiring more than 75 emerging professionals/ students/ HI graduates to fill full-time contract, co-op, and summer positions at Mackenzie Health, the regional health service provider for Ontario's Southwest York Region.

Mackenzie Health has embarked on a full implementation of the Epic hospital information system (HIS) as part of its drive to achieve Level 7 in the HIMSS EMRAM scale within three years. The hospital also has plans to open a second major site in 2020, and will become the first hospital in Canada to implement the full suite of Epic systems.

To facilitate adoption of the new HIS, the hospital will need 75 Super Users and 15 Credentialed Trainers to be drawn largely from COACH membership and academic contacts.

"We need to cast a wide net, and quickly," said Diane Salois-Swallow, chief information officer at Mackenzie Health. "The COACH membership community is simply the best place to find this many applicants with a basic understand of HIS implementation complexities."

75 Super Users/15 Credentialed Trainers
Super Users will provide direct end-user support and assistance during implementation training sessions. Customer service skills and knowledge of the new system will ensure hospital users are comfortable during the go-live process. The Super User position is a paid position, and is defined as a placement or summer term opportunity starting May 1, 2017 and ending August 21, 2017. For more information about the Super User role, visit http://bit.ly/2kF4AWK.

Credentialed Trainers will train end-users (using existing training materials) and provide go-live support. Credentialed Trainers will be required to commit to a longer term, from March 30, 2017 until August 21, 2017. This is a paid position. For more information about the Credentialed Trainer role, visit http://bit.ly/2kiRy00.

"We are happy to be supporting Mackenzie Health in this important initiative," said Mark Casselman, COACH CEO. "This benefits everyone. The hospital benefits by being able to tap into a group of engaged, motivated young digital health professionals, trained for Canadian HIS delivery. And our Academic and Student Members will have the opportunity to put their education to practical use in a major health service delivery transformation. COACH is growing, and this is the first in a wave of new partnerships that will connect, inspire, and educate the digital health professionals who are contributing to the future of healthcare in Canada."
Applicants who require training in HIS delivery best-practices will participate in a COACH education session. Funding partners interested in reaching and investing in the next generation of the Canadian digital health workforce are welcome to participate in this education initiative.

Patient safety has become a major concern in health care. Key Institute of Medicine and Canadian reports starting as early as 1999, underscore the importance of being safety conscious and proactive in identifying safety risks in healthcare. Today’s eHealth systems are increasingly important in enabling improvements in patient safety, but they can also inadvertently introduce new risks into the healthcare environment.

This online program introduces the COACH eSafety Guidelines: a comprehensive resource for health information professionals and others with a responsibility to ensure that eHealth systems are built and operated in a manner that reduces the risk to patient safety. The Guidelines provide a sound basis for implementing an eSafety Management Program including the assessment of risks using the eHealth Safety Case.
Session 1: Introduction to eSafety & the eSafety Management Program - November 19, 2014
This session will provide a foundation for understanding the issues and opportunities for addressing safety issues in eHealth systems and cover the main steps in setting up an eSafety management program .

Session 2: The eSafety Case - November 26, 2014

Coursera, Health Hacking, Diagnosis Apps, and Interoperability

There has been a lot happening and this is just briefly some of the things I have been tracking. A lot of my time is being spent taking a Coursera online course taught by Dr. Peter Singer (the Australian, not the U. of T. Ethicist) called "Practical Ethics". It is a 12 week course and there are about 25,000 people taking this MOOC. There are writing assignments, peer evaluations of such, video lessons, guest lecturers, discussion forums, essential background readings - I am very impressed and at the same time, very busy just trying to hang on.

COACH recently had a webinar on Health Hacking, facilitated by some of the founders of this fascinating organization. I would strongly recommend that anyone with an interest in healthcare technology and informatics, take a serious look at their website, and / or attend one of their hackathons. It is becoming so popular the next eHealth conference will have a Hackathon. During the webinar they mention how even the Canadian Medical Association thought highly of the concept. I was trying to find the article the CMA wrote about it but could only find this one:

We all know what happened to Google Health, and I am not sure today where Microsoft Healthvault is these days, so I am skeptical about any buzz we might hear about Apple Healthbook.

The Kuzweil Accelerating Intelligence news reported on a new Do It Yourself Medical Diagnosis App.  I have not had time to look into the details of this, but it might be a software candidate for an integrated Tricorder project.

The last item is really a gem, and it is the keynote talk given at HIMISS interoperability showcase, by Malcolm Gladwell. Malcolm uses 3 examples in the evolution of technology to make comparison to how new standards in interoperability can transform healthcare technology: shipping containers, Israeli military technology example called the Bekaa Valley Turkey Shoot, mp3 players.

Not why eHealth but when

I was reading COACH - Canada's Health Informatics Association "eHealth Convergence Forum Report: Addressing Key Issues in First Nations Health" report. Somewhere in there I read that the consensus or attitude towards eHealth among First Nations was no longer a question of why but when. eHealth representatives among First Nations have presented at recent eHealth conferences and I think it is a smart move on their part.

COACH Privacy Guides now available for Healthcare Organizations from eHealth Ontario

I knew eHealth Ontario was licensing the patient portal guidelines from COACH, because I was working with the COACH Expert Group that was writing them when it was announced. The recent news announcement that all 3 privacy and security of personal health information guidelines are being offered for free to Healthcare organizations in Ontario is wonderful.  I am now working on updates to the 2011 EMR guideline and the special edition of implementing the EMR with a COACH Expert Group again. Unfortunately, I am not as much as an expert this time because a lot of it is about legislation - not my speciality.  I knew more about patient portals at the time.  If you work in healthcare, you can apparently download them for free here.  So far, however, the download has not worked for me.  Not sure what the problem is.  Maybe it recognized my name and somehow knew I already have copies of these:

Privacy and Security for Patient Portals: 2012 Guidelines for the Protection of Health Information Special Edition

COACH special edition on patient portals
The COACH 2012 Special Edition "Privacy and Security for Patient Portals 2012 Guidelines for the Protection of Health Information Special Edition", has just been released. I got my web version copy in advance last week because I was a member of the Expert Group who initially drafted it.  The final product looks really good, and presents the hard work of the volunteer group really well. Highly recommended reading if you are at all thinking of implementing or using patient portals, otherwise known as electronic Personal Health Records.

ePosters at eHealth 2012 Vancouver

I was just looking through some of the ePosters from the eHealth 2012 conference in Vancouver.  I am glad I didn't go because I was accepted for an ePoster and I don't think mine (on Personal Health Records) would look as good as some of these.

Global eHealth & Environmental eHealth

I have read some of the work of Dr. Richard Scott from the University of Calgary on Information Communication Technology and Global Health.  I have in my calendar to listen to a webinar that he will give today through COACH.  I didn't know he was leading a program on Environmental eHealth - which is thinking outside the box literally. Had a look through the WHO Global eHealth Bulletin the other day.

Integration Engines - the Cloverleaf on the Information Highway

I was looking at eHealth career postings on the COACH website and found one at Telus for an Integration Health Business Consultant. What caught my attention was one of the Responsibilities: "Develop HL7 interfaces to integrate disparate health care applications using a variety of commercial integration engines such as: Oracle’s Java CAPS; e*Gate (SRE); Datagate; OpenESB; SOA Suite; Quovadx Cloverleaf; webMethods; IBM WebSphere; and Microsoft BizTalk." I had heard of Biztalk and knew it was a web service, probably using Service Oriented Architecture, but the rest of them were all new to me. This is a veritable flotilla of integration engines for disparate systems. It was only minutes later when I found myself searching for information about Cloverleaf ("The Swiss Army Knife for Data Conversions"), that I landed on the MDI Solutions website. Here I found a grouping of HL7 Integration Engines like I have never seen before. Their webpage on HL7 Integration Expertise includes many of these same integration engines.
